You guys know how much I love fresh flowers. I’ve written all about it here and if you follow me on Instagram you’ve seen just a few photos with some fresh blooms but I have a secret that I don’t think I’ve ever shared with you. I’m a plant killer, indoor plants at least. It’s sad but it’s true. I just can’t seem to keep them thriving or even alive for that matter. I’ve tried many times and one day I hope to get the confidence up again to give it another shot. For now I’m rocking the faux greenery. With spring right around the corner I’ve been added greenery here and there to give a little life to each room. I thought this month’s series of Cozy Living by my friend Jennifer from Town and Country Living would be the perfect time to talk about ways to decorate with faux greenery.
I’m not a huge fan of just any old faux plants, I’m pretty picky. I try to avoid most fabric made faux stems most of the time, only because they can appear very fake. I have found that the plastic/more rubber like plants look more genuine.
This little faux fern from Ikea fits perfectly in an antique ironstone pot that I have. Ikea’s faux plants come in little black plastic pots but I like to place them in something else to dress them up a bit and give them a more realistic look. I tried my hand at a real maidenhair fern once and it made it almost two months. That thing was a diva. I have big respect for those of you that can keep them alive!

Another great way to bring in faux plants is with quality blooms. One flower that doesn’t realign grow well here in Georgia is the Lilac. It’s a total shame because I adore them. I recently came across some really realistic looking lilac stems at Hobby Lobby and I knew I had to take them home. Ironically they are fabric flowers but I thought they looked pretty good! Placing them in a glass vase with water gives them a real look. When a flower that you really love isn’t available in your area, fake it!
Another option for for faux greenery this spring are topiaries. I love real topiaries but when the real thing isn’t a possible, fake it. I’ve come across several this season that look real! My laundry room is a room that doesn’t get a ton of natural sunlight so keeping most plants alive in this space would be difficult. My faux topiary works great here!
If you haven’t found any faux greenery that you love you can always make your own out of greenery stems and a container of choice. I recently found some pretty fern stems and decided to pot them in a pretty aged terra cotta pot. Here’s the simple how-to.
Although I’m really looking forward to decorating with fresh flowers this spring and summer I love incorporating faux greenery. There’s so many to choose from and you don’t have to have a green thumb to keep it around.
This is such a fun time to decorate and I look forward to sharing my spring home with you guys next week! I hope you’ll hop over to a few of my friends lovely homes and see how they’re bringing a little cozy into their homes this month.

So pretty, Amanda. I agree with you that some of the leathery type of faux plants look more realistic. I forget to think of IKEA for faux plants. I’ll have to remember that tip!
I started using faux plants because I had two cats that tended to destroy real plants. Now that they have both died, I have a few of both living and faux plants. Love the way that you have used yours.
I LOVE Ikea for my faux plants, I adore using a pop of green inside of cabinets too, it just really adds life, you know? I love your home, and that laundry room, sigh! Perfect use of your faux babies, you’d never know. Now I need to find faux lilac!
come on girl…a maidenhair fern!! 🙂 I had no idea you live in ga. what part? are we neighbors and I just didn’t know it?
Hi Marie,
Love your posts! Did you refurbish the 5 drawer dresser that is featured in this blog? If so, what color is it? It is absolutely stunning and I would love to give it a try.
