Okay friends, moment of honesty. I’ve been working on my master bedroom like a mad woman this week. Do I normally complete a room frantically? No, but this is the One Room Challenge after all. Our whole house is one big project so if I can get my room done you can do it too! It’s fun having a project to work on and know that we are all in the struggle together.
This week we finished our headboard and hung our beautiful bedside lamps from Wayfair.com. The headboard was more than simple and so easy on the wallet. This may not be for everyone but it works for us. We really only have one wall that our bed works on. Instead of buying or building a headboard we trimed out and planked one right onto the wall.
We started with two 1×6″ at 6′ tall and a third 1×6″ to top them off. I chose to let the top 1×6″ hang over on each side by an inch. We nailed them into place using our nail gun. I made sure to mark the studs to make sure we hit a couple.
We used a sheet of under-layment for the planks in the middle. We cut them into 4″, 5″ and 6″ strips and alternated them in the middle of the headboard. We used a penny to keep the gaping the consistent. You can see where we’ve used under-layment as ship lap in the past here and here. J topped the headboard off using an 1×4′. He made sure to screw that into the studs we have marked. He trimmed out the top in crown molding and filled all the nail holes.
After a couple coats of white paint it was finished! It took just a couple hours one afternoon and came in under $40 for our king size bed. We already had the crown molding and paint on hand so it would be more around $60 if we had to purchase those few things.
As much as I love the headboard the two lamps on either side complete it. I knew from the start that I wanted swinging arm lamps. They’re super handy for reading in bed and they free up space on the nightstands. I found these rubbed oil bronze beauties on Wayfair.com. A couple days later they arrived. It took all of 20 minutes to hang them. I’m totally in love! I love the warm tone of the shades and they put off just the right amount of light.
I also finished a little decor flip. Remember these questionable mirrors I found at a thrift store for $5?
I took the mirrors out and gave them a coat of white chalk paint and a simple fern wreath, they’re a cute addition to the room. Here’s to cheap and simple wall decor!
I’ve still got several things to finish but I’m getting closer each day. This weekend I hope to tackle the old, outdated ceiling fan and get my TV wall finished. Have you seen the other awesome bloggers who are participating in the ORC yet? Check them out here. I’ll see ya next week friends!
Big thanks to Wayfair.com for sponsoring part of this room makeover!

Thanks Iris! We’re in the home stretch now, very exciting 🙂
The headboard wall with those lamps??? fabulous. I have always loved swing arm lamps!!!
You and me both Marcie! I’ve never had a great spot for them until now. I’m loving them though!
Love the headboard. Alternating the widths adds that extra bit of detail. It’s down to crunch time. Hope we both finish our ORC rooms!
Dreamy Amanda! I just love everything!
Thanks Deb 🙂
You’re nailing it! SO gorgeous!
Thanks Samantha! It’s always good to see what you envisioned come to life.
I LOVE your headboard idea, it looks amazing! The bedside lamps are perfection as well. We are definitely feeling the frantic struggle over here too.
Thank you so much Roxanne! The lamps are one of my favorite things in the room. 🙂
I really like swing arm lamps, too, even though I don’t have any yet. I think they would be great in our bedroom – a future project! I love what you did with the mirrors – the paint and hanging the wreath. So classy! I’ll check back to see how you tackle the old ceiling fan. I also have some of those!
Thank you so much Lucille. Let’s hope I get around to that ugly fan, ha! Out of site, out of mind. I have to say this ORC has def. been the push I needed to tackle the space.
I love the clean lines of your headboard.
Simple trim that is almost modern and those lamps are gorgeous! 🙂
The asymmetry of the horizontal planks add great interest.
Beautiful room!
Where did you find the cute pine garland that you have hanging on the headboard?
Hi there!!! I spotted his headboard on IG in your Christmas decorating post and LOVE it!! So much so, I’m making it too????(Hope you don’t mind the copycat! Lol) Was wondering how you fastened the vertical “side boards”? Were you lucky enough to have a stud on both sides to nail to? Or did you use some sort of adhesive? Thanks for the inspiration!!!
