It’s fall so bring on all of the apple recipes! This apple dutch bread is sweet, moist and oh so good! The cinnamon streusel topping is just the icing on the cake.
Apple season is here and my little heart couldn’t be more excited! Baked apple goods are the epitome of fall in our house but I really don’t need another reason to break out the apples in my baking. I love to bake with them year round and I’m always looking for yummy recipes that include them. Today I’ve joined a few friends to share our apple recipes with you for the autumn season. It was hard to narrow it down to just one recipe today but this apple & walnut dutch bread is a staple in our home and I bet you’ll love it too!
If you’re looking for something simple, and versatile for the fall season this is a great start. We always seem to have apples on hand, especially after we make our annual apple picking trip. It’s very easy to make and it can be served with coffee, along with breakfast or dessert.
This recipe is sweet, moist and oh so good! The cinnamon streusel topping is the icing on the cake. It’s delicious all on it’s one or with a little bit of butter or honey. It can be made with or without walnuts. I think they add some great texture but we do make it both ways and it’s a winner either way.
Cinnamon Apple & Walnut Dutch Bread
Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup softened butter
- 2 Lg. eggs
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (or soft white wheat flour if you're milling your own.)
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. baking soda
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 2 cups peeled and diced tart apples - about 2 med. sized apples (granny smith work great.)
Streusel Topping
- 1/4 cup cold butter cut into cubes
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp. cinnamon
Instructions
-
Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees.
-
Peel and dice apples and set aside.
-
In a mixing bowl mix together flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder and set aside.
-
In a mixer with a paddle attachment, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add each egg one at a time until will blended. Slowly pour in the buttemilk and vanilla and mix until incorporated.
-
With a cup at a time add in the flour mixture and mix until combined.
-
Fold in the diced apples and chopped walnuts and pour into a greased 9x5 in. loaf pan.
-
To make the topping use a food processor and pulse until mixture becomes crumbly. Sprinkle on top of the bread batter.
-
Bake in the oven for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean. Let it rest in the pan for about 10 minutes and then take it out to finish cooling on a cooling rack. Slice and enjoy!
Look at that beautiful golden brown topping! Can you tell it’s my favorite part?
This is a great bread to wrap with parchment paper and ribbon and give as a fall/Thanksgiving gift to friends and family. We always make a few fall goodies each year and deliver them to loved ones and I plan to make several of these loaves for just that.
