I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe Christmas! I’m really looking forward to a new year.
As some of you know my husband has a huge family. There are nine children in all! Half are married and have children of their own. At Christmas time all the kids draw names. When we got my brother and sister-in-law we were pumped! They’ve only been married a couple years and were in need of a head board. I’ve been wanting to make this particular head board for a while now.
We used pine. We were a little picky with the middle boards. You really don’t want any of them to bow. I stained all the edges with a dark walnut stain by Rust-Oleum. You want to make sure you stain any area that you want the stain to show through the paint.
Once the stain is dry you can then apply a coat of Vaseline. Yes, Vaseline! It’s works great for this painting technique.
Once you’ve got that on all the stained edges, apply your paint. I used a color called Eggshell Cream by Behr. It is one of my favorite colors to use on furniture. You’ll see once the paint starts to dry where you applied the Vaseline. The paint will not adhere to the wood in those areas. Once the paint has completely dried, take a rag and wipe off the paint on the edges. Some places maybe a little more difficult to remove. I used a 120 grit sand paper to carefully remove the paint.
There you have it!
You can find the building plans here. I’m absolutely in love with this bed. I think I need this one for myself!
