Happy Monday everyone! A lot of folks are headed back to work for the first day since Christmas break. I’ll pray your day goes by fast and painless! I had a really fun and yet frustrating weekend. The frustrating part came from my Silhouette Cameo, which I am absolutely in love people. It was a Christmas gift that I have been wanting for some time now, just never wanted to invest the money. I’ve been trying all kinds of things, some more frustrating to figure out than others. I’ll be sharing those things with you soon. I also did a really easy build this weekend. I’ve been making some small adjustments to my mom’s kitchen this last month. The shelves are just one of them. They were designed by The Shanty-2-Chic sisters. They are very simple to make. This is something you ladies can do on your own. It took me just an afternoon.
Here’s how to make them!
My shelves measure 30″ across. I used 2×3’s to make the bones of the boxes. I cut 3 pieces at 7.5″ for each shelf and made 1 1/2″ pocket holes and attached them to the middle and the ends of the 30″ piece with 2 1/2″ pocket hole screws. I attached the shelves to studs with 3.5″ wood screws.
I glued and nailed in a 1/4″ smooth plywood piece to the bottom of each shelf. I’m not a fan of using the table saw by myself so I had Home Depot cut these for me. If you have yours cut at a store make sure you remind the employee to take the blade into account. I of course did not mention it and mine were off by almost 1/4 of an inch. So he had to re-cut them for me. It was funny that I had to instruct the guy on how to rip the plywood correctly!
I glued and nailed in a 1×10″ cut to size on top and 1×4″ on each side. It was at this point that I thought I could have used a pallet. If you’re going for a really rustic shelf it would work great!
I measured and cut the last 1×4″s for the fronts and nailed them in place. I taped off the walls and stained them right in place. I used a dark walnut stain (one of my favorites.)
The shelves averaged around $15 a piece. It’s a steal! I’m absolutely love them and love the storage they provide. They would work great in any room.

Kelli thank you so much! I made the pocket holes with a Kreg Jig. You can purchase them at most home improvement stores. I bought mine at Home Depot. They’re an awesome tool. It really opens up the door for really cool furniture builds. They’re well worth the money!
