Take a tour of our cozy Christmas family room and stay a while. This room holds family movie nights, games nights with friends and lots of fun conversation. Simple festive touches make this room extra cozy for the Christmas season!
Hello everyone! I suppose I thought that the home tours here on SM were finished, but it seems I almost forgot our family room. This was one of the first rooms that I photographed for a tour. I had planned to share it yesterday and completely forgot. It’s hard to believe because we spend so much time as a family in this room, especially now with our Christmas movie marathons. This room has always been warm and cozy, but lately it’s been extra cozy with the addition of a tree and garland.
For years we stuck with a real tree. After starting my blog we slowly made the transition to artificial trees. It just made decorating easier. At first I wasn’t a big fan of flocked trees. I had always found green trees to be a little more traditional and classic. It wasn’t until about three years ago that I purchased this flocked tree on sale, and I began to really love them. While our tree in our living room holds all of our family’s sentimental ornaments each year, this tree has seen several different themes and colors.
I decorated this tree just as I did last year. After all, I promised that I would use only what I already had on hand this Christmas, nothing new. Like the kitchen, we were just craving something familiar.
I always start my trees by fluffing all the branches and then I place my pinecone and berry stems and follow it up with glass ornaments. We have a few small children that visit our home on a regular basis, so I always use floral wire to wire my ornaments to the branches. After all the ornaments are on, I place 3 ft. ribbon pieces in waves all of the tree. I like for my ribbon to flow in different directions and I love using two different kinds of ribbon for a variation in color and texture. Both of the ribbons on this tree were purchased last year at Hobby Lobby.
The faux garland from our mantel last year drapes the mirror above our antique chest now. I used two 3M hooks on either side of the mirror to hold the garland in place. I also hung some mercury glass garland for a little glitz. As you all know, I’m a big fan of the mercury glass garlands. We purchased two strands several years ago and I use them each year in different places around our home. You can find the mercury glass garland here.
Simple stems of greenery and vintage nutcrackers add a little magic to our shelves.
Adding a pieces of greenery here or there is an inexpensive touch that is so festive and elegant. I placed a small stem beside a stack of postcards that we’ve collected on past trips. It instantly feels more festive!
I kept the same pillow covers that I used during the fall season. The golden tones work beautifully with the emerald greens and silver colors in the room. I love textiles that can serve for more than one season. It keeps things budget friendly and you don’t have to store as much.
I’m so thrilled I got to share this room with you today. Although we haven’t changed this room much from since autumn, I hope that you’ll find some of the decorating helpful as you decorate your own home. This is the first Christmas that this space has been complete. We kicked off our Christmas movie marathon here last week and we’re enjoying this room so much already. We can really kick back and relax in this space. You can see this room’s full before and after here.
I’d love to know how your holiday decorating is coming along. Have you been finished for weeks or are you just starting? Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you have a wonderful week, friends!
