Happy April, friends! It’s a new month and I’m so happy to be sharing another way we have made our home cozy this year for the cozy home series, started by my dear friend, Jennifer from Town and Country Living. I wasn’t sure what exactly I wanted to share with you guys this month until a couple weeks ago I was sitting on the floor playing cars with my five year old and it hit me. One of the essentials to a cozy home is the soft rugs under our feet. That’s just my opinion anyways. I didn’t want to talk about just rugs today, but instead the concept of layering your area rugs. Last month I did just that in our family room and it has changed the room completely for the better! Here’s 3 reasons to layer your area rugs.

It Adds Soft, Cozy Texture
For as long as we’ve been in this house (over two years) we’ve had a 9×12′ jute rug in the family room. It’s been a fantastic rug and filled the space well. There’s a couple things that have kept me from loving it. It’s very brown, too much brown when paired with the brown hardwoods and the feel of it. Jute holds up great but it’s not the softest. It’s not a rug that makes you want to sit on the floor. My five year old has been the one to complain about it the most. Which makes sense considering he spends hours playing on the floor.
I finally broke down a month ago and purchased a soft 5×8′ rug with a bit of color and a beautiful pattern. It’s much more comfy for play and our feet has been so much happier for it.
It Defines the Conversation Area
Having a large area rug is great to add warmth to a space. It can be difficult depending on the size to define the actually conversation area. Adding a smaller area rug on top allows you to define that area better and creates a cozy sitting space.
It’s Can Save Your Budget
Purchasing a good quality area rug can be an ivestment to say the least. It’s not something I would say cheap out on but you want to stay within your budget too. A basic jute rug can be pretty inexpensive. This 9×12’ rug I have was under $80! It allowed more room in our budget for a smaller but better quality rug to layer on top. We spent half the price for the two rugs than we would have spent for one large printed rug. You get more bang for your buck!
Every time I walk into our family room I’m so glad I decided to take the dive and purchase the new rug. As much as I love it though I still really like the jute rug. It just made sense in this space to layer them. I think if you’ve struggled with any of these same issues, layering your rugs is a great solution!
If you’ve layered your area rugs I’d love to hear how you like it. Do you have a favorite rug in your home? Our new rug is quickly becoming one of my favorites!
Have a lovely weekend friends and I hope you’ll hop over to a few friends of mine and see what they’re sharing that makes their home a little cozier this time of the year!

So pretty, Amanda. I haven’t layered rugs but I do like the look. The jute looks like a border around the smaller rug. Great idea!
Thank you so much, Jennifer! I love the border look too. We def. needed a little color in that space. 🙂
Your room looks so comfy. Love the layered rug look and where did you find a 9 x 12 jute for $80?
Thank you! I purchased it from Overstock.com during their Memorial Day sale two years ago. A couple times a year they have some great sales on their rugs and you can get some pretty deep discounts. 🙂
I love the added texture the different layers bring to the space!
Thanks Kristi! It’s def. been great on the feet!
The — layering– worked perfectly for you. The color tones of the top rug brings the room completely together, from top to bottom. You did it very smoothly. IT IS A GREAT LOOK !!
Thank you, Margaret! I couldn’t agree more. 🙂 The floor really did need a little more color. There was so much brown going on. Thanks for stopping by!
I love layers in general, it just makes cozy sense to layer rugs too! I haven’t done this yet, but you’ve totally inspired me to! Beautiful room, I adore those flowers too! xo
Oh, me too Laurie! That’s one thing about fall and winter that I love so much, even when it comes to clothing. This had been on my list for some time. I’m so glad I pulled the trigger. It would look just as lovely in your home!
Great reasons! I’ve thought about it but not done it yet. Will have to give it a try!
Thanks Shannon! I totally get it. It’s been on my list for far too long. I’m so glad I finally got around to it. You should def. go for it!
