I love when I find a decor or furniture piece that I’ve been hunting for a long time. I found the perfect antique secretary desk for our living room last week and I’m one step closer to completing our room refresh!
Don’t you just love it when you finally find something that you’ve been on the hunt for for quite some time? For the last couple of years I’ve been on the hunt for a furniture piece to put on a wall in our living room. I needed something petite and preferably antique. What made it tricky was that whatever I chose couldn’t block the vent on the wall. Needless to say I never found anything that fit the bill until last week.
While on my way home from running errands last week I stopped in one of my favorite little antique stores. As I came around a corner there she was! Petite, oh so pretty and legs that gave it a lift. I was in love instantly.
I’ve loved antiques and vintage furniture and decor for as long as I can possibly remember. As I’ve gotten older I’ve really honed in on my personal style and have tired to find pieces that are unique and have a story to tell. Unique came to mind when I saw this secretary desk. I loved the detailed top and the carved design in the sides and drawers. The size was ideal to fit the wall between our window seat and back door in our living room. I knew that it was the perfect piece!
I’m flirting with the idea of sanding it down to it’s natural wood but I don’t know if I’ll actually attempt it or not. I’ll have to get my courage up first.
Over the weekend I styled the shelves with items that I already had. Styling shelves have Never been one of my favorite things. I’m still trying to improve my skills and practice when I can. I’m not sure if I have everything just the way I like it yet or not but those things can take a little time to get just right. The key seems to be layering and mixing finishes and textures. I personally love the collected look with a mixture of old and new.
One thing I really loved was that all of the drawers have the original liner in them. I was really surprised at how good of shape it is in too.
Finding this secretary makes me even more anxious to share our living with you. Not too long ago I wrote about the refresh that I started this year. You can read that here. I’m slowly getting things together. I’ve incorporated a couple new chairs and will also be bringing in a new accent table. I hope to share the space really soon!

Thank you so much Erika! Shelf styling isn’t one of my strengths but I’m working on it. 😉
Amanda — I just love your new secretary! Gorgeous! As for me, I wouldn’t refinish it as it is perfectly beautiful as it. It has a wonderful patina already and a lovely wood tone that blends in seamlessly with your other dressers and such. Great find gal!! Love your blog too! Penny
Thank you Penny! I’m relieved to hear you say so because the more I’ve thought about sanding it down the more I’ve dreaded it. I wasn’t sure if it had too much of an orange tone. I’m pleased to get a second opinion, thanks 🙂 I think she’ll stay as is!
Amanda,
Your secretary is beautiful! You styled it beautifully as well, with lovely vignettes! What a perfect fit!!!
I agree with Penny that it’s just right without sanding. You are very talented! I’m enjoying following you as I’m new to your blog.. (I’m a Georgia grandmother who lives south of Atlanta.)
Have a great day,
Teresa
Love your new piece. I think it’s beautiful just as it is.
This really gets me excited to see all that you have been doing! I love your style and eye for design. I don’t know….it is just so natural and one that so many can relate to. I love your new piece. It was worth waiting for!
